my father served in the 8th army as a Royal Engineer in north africa, sicily and italy certainly at monte casino and el alamein where do I start in tracing his journey?

Once you have the forms filled in and sent off it will take a few weeks for the records to be sent to you.
Get a copy of the Battalion War Diary. It gives very detailed accounts of where they went.
