You need to get hold of his Service Record from the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow. This will show his complete time in the Army and will also show whether he was awarded the Italy.
Given that 4 PARA were part of 2 Independent Parachute Brigade, I would be surprised if he was not entitled to the Italy Star – if he served with them.
4 PARA were at Cassino for a time – which is my area of interest.
